Céline Dion Opens Up About Her Battle with Stiff Person Syndrome

Céline Dion has shared the profound impact that a rare neurological condition, stiff person syndrome, has had on her life, voice, and ability to perform.

In her first televised interview since announcing her diagnosis in 2022, the global superstar spoke about the challenges she faces. She described the condition as feeling like “someone is strangling you,” with intense pressure on her throat that affects her ability to sing. Demonstrating the difficulty, Dion explained how her voice becomes strained, unable to hit higher or lower notes, often leading to painful spasms.Celine Dion

Dion first publicly revealed that she was battling stiff person syndrome in late 2022. This disorder causes severe muscle stiffness in the torso and limbs, along with intense spasms that can be debilitating. Dion shared that she began noticing symptoms as early as 2008 while on tour, particularly when she struggled to control her voice. Initially, she dismissed the symptoms, hoping they would pass, but they soon spread to her hands and feet, significantly impacting her daily life.

The condition has also led to serious injuries, with Dion revealing that the severe spasms have even caused broken ribs. This ongoing health battle forced her to cancel her Las Vegas residency in 2021 and her world tour, which was a difficult decision for the singer.

Dion has been undergoing intensive therapy five days a week to manage her symptoms, working on her entire body, from her toes and knees to her voice. Despite her efforts, she remains uncertain about her ability to return to the stage. Dion expressed her longing to perform again but admitted that her future in music is unclear.

For those looking to understand more about her journey with stiff person syndrome, Dion’s story will be further explored in a documentary set to be released soon.
